This 1930's home was restored to its original splendor plus some added modern amenities!
Having a home back in the early part of the 20th century was a matter of simplicity for most.
This home has two bedrooms on the second floor, however, the only bathroom was located on the main floor next to the kitchen. This is not a practical solutions for modern America, so we had to figure it out. After a lot of measurement, head scratching, permits and city inspections, we were able to place a new bathroom with shower on the upper level between the two bedroom - taking a little room from both large bedrooms. We think it turned out superbly!
Another missing element was a laundry room. There were laundry hook-ups in the cellar, however, to get there you had to lift a hatch door to find the stairs. This wasn't going to work for today's homeowner. Once again, we had to search for a logical place for a new laundry closet. After designing the kitchen and laying out the plans for the new cabinets and island bar, we found just the place for the laundry. As we were moving along through the renovation we didn't think to take proper pictures of the laundry room, however, the red arrows in the pictures below will give you a great idea where we added the walls and plumbing, and where we made space for a stackable washer/dryer set. We also added lower profile tri-fold doors for easier access and to make sure there wasn’t a door obstructing the kitchen.
We converted the pole barn in the back yard into a one car detached garage. There were support posts down the middle that we had to move and add new headers for support. This garage addition certainly added value to the home.
This house was nearly 90 years old so we felt a thorough check of the foundation was in order. We called Olson Foundation Repair and they gave us recommendation for what might need new support. We had Olson do all of the necessary work needed to assure the safety and structure of the home. It will be around for a very long time.
